3 Things to Remember When You Unpack a Mattress in a Box

When you order a mattress in a box, you need to get the mattress ready for your bed. During the packing process, these mattresses go through a compression procedure to make them smaller.  When you open them up, they decompress and go back to their regular size.

While unpacking a mattress in a box isn't hard, you do need to know what you are doing and what will happen before you start. This gives you the best chance of getting the mattress on your bed in the right condition.

What do you need to know?

1. Follow the Unpacking Instructions

Most mattresses in a box are tightly wrapped in plastic. You have to open the plastic to get the mattress out and ready to resize itself. For the best results, follow the unpacking instructions.

For example, the instructions may tell you to cut the plastic in a certain place to start with. It's best to do what you are told here. If you just try to cut anywhere, you risk puncturing the tightly wrapped mattress with your scissors or knife.

It's also a good idea to follow any positioning instructions before you open the mattress. For example, if the instructions say to put the mattress in a certain position on your bed, then do this before you cut the plastic.

Once you start to take the plastic off, the mattress takes on a life of its own. It's easier to position the mattress if it is in the right place.

2. Work Out Your Waiting Period

Once you open up a mattress in a box, the mattress resizes itself really quickly. However, this doesn't mean that it is ready to sleep on. While the mattress gets big fast, it is likely to need a few hours to fully decompress.

Sleeping on the mattress before it has fully settled may leave you with a permanently lumpy mattress. So give it time to settle. If you can, set the mattress up early in the day so it will be ready for you at night.

3. Ventilate the Room

When you open up a mattress in a box, you may notice that it gives out a chemical type of smell. This is normal. The smell dissipates as the mattress settles; however, you should ventilate the room during this period. So make sure to open a window until the smell dies away.
