3 Tips for Properly Organising Your Storage Unit for Easy Access

Imagine  you have just remembered you stored essential documents in a storage unit out of town, and you need them urgently. Once you get to the storage facility, you find that everything is in shambles and it dawns on you that you are going to need a few hours of thorough searching. Unfortunately, this is a scenario most people are familiar with. If you have a personal storage unit, then hassle-free access to your belongings is what you should be striving for. This article provides quick tips on how to properly organise your storage unit.

Use Boxes That Are the Same Size -- A common practice amongst storage unit users is to choose box sizes depending on the size of items they want to store. For instance, for pictures and documents, most people go for small-sized boxes and for items like sweaters and coats they choose large boxes. The problem with this strategy is that you end up storing the smaller boxes inside the larger ones, and that makes retrieval a challenge. A different approach that works well is to use boxes of the same size for all your belongings. It not only makes stacking the boxes easy, but it also allows for easy retrieval. However, you have to ensure the boxes containing heavier items are at the bottom so that they hold well under boxes with light items.

Label Boxes -- While you might not need the items you store in a storage unit in the immediate future, you should always give yourself the benefit of the doubt. However, most people do not keep this in mind and end up throwing their items in unlabeled boxes. If you do this, you will end up having to pull everything out of the storage unit when you need an item. Therefore, you must label each storage box. For example, if you have a box containing boots, sweaters and coats, you can tag the box 'apparel' or 'clothing.' Similarly, boxes containing photos and gifts can be labelled 'moments.' The approach makes it easy to retrieve items fast.

Plan the Unit Layout -- If you access your unit frequently, then you need to think about the unit's layout. First, you need a clear path in the centre to give you easy access to the boxes in the unit. However, if you have too many belongings, then creating a path can be challenging. In that case, place movable boxes at the centre so that you can move them out of the way with minimal hassle.
