Locating the Problem

The first step to fixing a malfunctioning awning is to locate the source of the problem. It gives you an insight into the tools you need and the approach you should take to restore your awning's normal function. Scrutinise your awning and look for signs of weather damage, rust, warping and torn sections on the fabric. Any of the stuff mentioned here can cause the awning to malfunction, and they are quite common because the awning has to endure tough conditions every day.  Extend your check to the motor and touch it gently for any signs of overheating. The smell of burnt rubber can also indicate an overheating or overworking motor. 

Fix Bad Rails

Bad rails are a common problem for homeowners with motorised awnings. They can be a result of frequent use, strong winds blowing against the awning or poor installation. If you have warped rails, begin by checking the top section of the awning to ensure that the fitting is tight as required. A loose fit will make the rails warp over time. Move on to the surface of the track, checking for any sections that are out of line. Tap them gently back into the required position. 

Lubricate the Track

Your motorised awning will also struggle if the tracks do not have enough lubricant. Rub appropriate lubricant down the pulley, rails and rollers. When doing this, keep pulling them back and forth to make sure that the awning does not struggle to move at any given point. 

Get a New Motor 

Motors are consumable parts, and they wear out with time. Therefore, don't be surprised if your awning's motor quits and goes quiet on you. Your awning merely needs a new motor. Get the motor from a convenience store and call in a technician to replace it for you.
